Ms. Verstreate's and Ms. Rzepka's 5th grade students are diving into one of the most exciting and important math concepts of the year—multiplying by fractions! This unit challenges students to think more deeply about numbers and their relationships, while also helping them build practical skills they’ll use for years to come.
Through hands-on activities, visual models (using number lines and bar models), and real-world examples, students are learning what it really means to multiply a number by a fraction. Instead of just memorizing steps, they’re exploring why multiplying by a fraction results in a smaller number (in many cases) and how this operation can represent part of a whole.
