Students at city hallThe fifth-grade students at Martin Road Elementary School took a walking tour of the City of Lackawanna, which included stops at City Hall and the Lackawanna Fire Department.

The purpose of this field trip was to expose students to their local government and introduce them to the various career opportunities that are potentially available to them within our municipality. At City Hall, Mayor Geoff Szymanski, Council President Annette Iafallo, First Ward Councilman John Ingram, Chief of Police James Michel, Director of Public Safety Ralph Galanti, City Clerk Jeff DePasquale, Patrolman Keith Kwiatkowski, and City Comptroller Carolyn Nicometo all explained their roles and responsibilities in our local government. The students participated in a question and answer session with these community leaders, asking specific questions about each of their jobs.

The students were then welcomed to Lackawanna City Court by the Hon. Kenneth A. Szyszkowski and the Lackawanna Drug Court, where the students learned about the judicial system process. Students then participated in a mock trial, The Case of the Stolen Lunchbox, in which they were assigned the roles of the many people that are involved in a court proceeding.

Finally, Captain Palczewski, Captain Strzelczyk, and their platoon provided a tour of Firehouse #3, which included a tour of the alarm room and a hose and ladder demonstration. Students were also able to tour the inside of a fire truck and try on various equipment.

The fifth-grade teachers would like to sincerely thank all of the community leaders that were involved in making this field trip such a great experience for our students. Special thanks to City Clerk DePasquale and Ptlm. Kwiatkowski for helping to organize this field trip.
